Green Moor centre is Sheffield & District Battalion’s residential centre for training and outdoor pursuits. The accommodation is provided in a chapel established in 1812. it has been altered and renovated to a high standard.

The village of  Green Moor stands on the Yorkshire Pennines and commands a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside, yet is only 8 and 10 miles from the towns of Barnsley and Rotherham, the city of Sheffield and Meadowhall Shopping Centre

The accommodation comprises of a heated two floor building with a basement which sleeps 28 people. The design is adaptable and can be used for single sex or mixed groups and includes disabled access. Onsite parking is adjacent to the building and easily accommodates three cars and two minibuses. A sheltered area at the rear is a great barbeque site. The basement includes a separate outdoor entry with drying facilities and boot racks. there is provision for table tennis, pool and darts. The front porch gives entrance to a 6 x 9 metres activity room. A rear lobby gives access to a staff/disabled bedroom, with suitable adjoining toilet and shower facilities. a dining room and separate well equipped kitchen completes the layout of the ground floor. On the first floor, three dormitories sleep 10, 8 and 6. a staff room sleeps 2 and has a full size sink. The sleeping accommodation consists of bunk beds and storage boxes. mattresses and pillows are provided but it is necessary to bring sleeping bags and pillow cases or blankets and bed linen. A small supply of spare blankets are kept in store. A 3 sink washroom is complimented with 3 separate showers and 3 toilets.

The facilities include a climbing traverse wall on the west wall of the activity room.  A collection of maps and guides plus fictional books and a number of games are provided. there is a music centre in the activity room and an electric organ.

The Delf - a beautiful public open space of 11 acres, including nature walks and a large grassed playing area.

Ivy Millennium Green - established in 2000, this is a small, quiet retreat overlooking part of the Upper Don Valley.

Rock Inn - is a village pub, which serves delicious home cooked meals every day of the week.

The Methodist Church - holds services every Sunday morning, preceded by Sunday School.

The Cricket Club - has 2 senior teams & 1 junior team which play throughout the season on a field higher up the village.

View Finder - erected over 300 metres above sea-level by the side of the Heritage trail, the locally produced stainless steel disk indicates various buildings and features which can be seen many miles across the landscape.

Wortley Forge - 3 quarters of a mile down the road is this ancient monument which is open to the public most Sundays.

 

Further Afield

Vast tracks of moorland start to appear in the landscape 3 miles from Green Moor, surrounding reservoirs at Midhope, Langsett and Longdendale and Derwent Valleys. Nearby Wharncliffe Crags are excellent  for gritstone climbing. The Peak District National Park Boundary starts 3 miles away.
